Montserrat Monastery

Montserrat Monastery is the cultural and religious heart of Catalonia. With origins tracing back to the 9th century, the monastery itself was founded around a 1000 years ago, in the 11th century. There remains little of the original structure as it was rebuilt once during the 16th century and again after the monastery was attacked by Napoleon's troops. The monastery has grown in importance immensely over the years and today, there are about 80 monks that reside in the monastery, praying, working and helping others.

Montserrat Basillica

The basilica, Montserrat Monastery's main church, showcases a blend of Gothic and Renaissance styles and has been extensively restored. The central nave boasts hand-carved sculptures of Ezekial, Jeremiah, Isaiah, and Daniel by Josep Llimona. A mosaic staircase leads to the niche, providing access to the Virgin's throne room with mosaics recounting her proclamation as Catalonia's patron saint. The crypt, opened in 1951, serves as the resting place for monks lost in the Spanish Civil War.

La Moreneta (Black Madonna)

The Black Madonna is a 12th-century Romanesque carving, a revered statue housed in Montserrat Monastery's Basilica. It is a symbol of spiritual significance and pilgrimage. La Moreneta means the “Dark One” and this refers to the dark colour of the statue. It is also known to have healing powers and many visit here to be blessed, including newly-wed couples. In 1881, Pope Leo XIII proclaimed the Virgin Lady as the Patron Saint of Catalonia and since then, its significance has been cemented in Montserrat.

The Escolania

Escolania de Montserrat is Europe's oldest boys' choir, dating back to the 14th century. They sing all over the world and reside year-round in Montserrat Monastery. Watching this world-famous choir perform live is one of the best experiences you can have in Montserrat. The choir usually performs everyday at the basilica, except on Saturdays. Timings may differ based on religious holidays and their schedules. Don't miss the chance to witness and take part in preserving Catalan musical traditions.

Montserrat Museum

If you are an art lover, Montserrat Museum is a must-visit. Opened in 1963 and designed by architect Josep Puig i Cadafalch, the museum is filled with archaeological artifacts, Renaissance and baroque paintings and more from Montserrat Monastery. The museum includes works by the likes of Pablo Picasso, Salvador Dali and some of local artist Fortuny’s most popular works. It also has temporary exhibition rooms with contemporary art, historical photographs, avant-garde paintings, and more.

Santa Cova & Funicular Ride

From Montserrat Monastery, take the Santa Cova funicular down to the trail and enjoy stunning views on the way to the Santa Cova, one of the most venerated religious sites in spain. Often referred to as the 'Holy Grotto', this is where the Virgin Mary was first sighted in Montserrat. There is also a chapel next to the cave that was built around 300 years ago. We recommend taking a walk down to Santa Cova and then riding the funicular back up to Monastery to avoid the steep climb back up but still get a pleasant walk in.

Ave Maria Path

After your visit to the Black Madonna, the exit will lead you along the Ave Maria Path at Montserrat. Here, visitors light candles as prayers to the Virgin Mary. It is an absolutely beautiful and cozy experience, with beautiful colored candles lined up inside the path. Join in with the many others that visit from all over the world and light a candle for a loved one or for the Virgin's blessings. Many even bring their own candles and with all the flickering lights and multi colored ambiance, it promises to be a unique part of your visit to Montserrat.

Sant Jeroni

Set out on a hike from Montserrat to Sant Jeroni, a four-hour trek culminating at the Montserrat mountain range's highest peak. Despite how long this sounds, the hike has a low difficulty rating, making it accessible to people of various fitness levels. On clear days, you can take in the breathtaking 360-degree views, spanning from the plains of Lleida and the Pyrenees peaks to Barcelona city and the sparkling Mediterranean Sea. Saint Michael’s Cross

For the best views with minimal effort, set out on a hike to La Creu de Sant Miquel (Saint Michael’s Cross). This walk takes under an hour and this route offers romantic views of the monastery. Along the way, you can see many works such as a sculpture of musician Pau Casals by Joan Rebull and another of Saint Francis of Assisi by Josep Viladomat, commemorating the 7th centenary of his death in 1927. This is a short hike suitable for all ages and it is the shortest and sweetest path you can take for incredible photos.

Daily Market

One of the best parts of Montserrat Monastery is their daily market. According to an old local tradition, local vendors gather at the market to sell their produce. Not much in variety has changed as far as local produce goes so you can expect different kinds of local honey, cheese, bread, cakes, fruit, nuts, and more. You can find enough fresh food there to gather up a picnic and have a bite with wonderful views. Make sure to visit Montserrat's daily market and support local businesses.
