What to expect at IDEAL Barcelona

Begin with the story of Pompeii

The key exhibit starts by introducing the world of ancient Pompeii, giving you historical context before the immersive sequences begin. Expect a blend of exhibition material, audiovisual storytelling, and digital interpretation that makes you feel like you’re in Pompeii, rather than being a mere spectator.

Step into a 360° projection hall

The centerpiece is IDEAL's vast immersive room, where more than 1,000 m² of projection surfaces turn walls and surrounding spaces into moving digital scenes. Music, narration and animation make the story feel less like something you watch and more like somewhere you enter.

Walk through ancient Rome

Large-scale digital storytelling recreates Roman life, architecture and spectacle, taking you closer to the atmosphere of Pompeii before Mount Vesuvius erupted. The experience combines historical themes with cinematic visuals to make the past feel immediate and tangible.

Experience the eruption

The exhibition builds towards the destruction of Pompeii, using projections, sound and immersive effects to recreate the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. Allow part of your roughly 90-minute visit for this central sequence, which forms the dramatic payoff of the experience.

Add a virtual reality layer

Selected IDEAL productions incorporate VR as an extension of the main exhibition. Rather than functioning as a standalone attraction, the VR component places you inside digitally reconstructed environments and continues the story from a first-person perspective.

Combine your visit with Barcelona's other highlights

Besides the key exhibition at the IDEAL Museum, you can also combine your tickets with a visit to the iconic Moco Museum, a contemporary art museum located in the historic 16th-century Palau Cervelló in the El Born neighborhood. Another option is a 24-hour Hop-on Hop-off tour of the city, giving you access to two routes and the city's best gems.

Insider tips for a memorable visit to the IDEAL Museum

  • Go early for a calmer experience: Weekday mornings tend to be a better bet if you want more room to take in the projections without feeling surrounded by a crowd. It also gives you more freedom to find a good spot in the immersive spaces.
  • Give yourself time to stand still: Don’t rush through the projection rooms. Some of the most interesting moments come from simply stopping for a few minutes and watching how the visuals move across the walls and floor around you.
  • Keep your camera flash off: Photography is allowed, so bring your phone or camera, but switch off the flash. The darker projection spaces make silhouettes and wide-angle shots particularly atmospheric.
  • Pair it with Montjuïc: IDEAL’s location makes it easy to build a half-day around the visit. Pair your immersive experience with nearby Montjuïc sights rather than treating it as a standalone stop, especially if you have limited time in Barcelona.
